The reload is where time is most visibly on the line in IPSC, and for FN 509 and FN 545 shooters, a magwell directly addresses that. The wider, chamfered opening a magwell provides gives the incoming magazine a more forgiving entry point — which under stage pressure, when your movement and the clock are both running, is a meaningful change.
